Small idea, big money. Also, wanna go to Bali?

It's a weird week. I'm asking for favors and asking people to come to Bali with me. Who's down?

Okay, Founders, I hope you had a good Valentine’s Day. Now, let’s get into it.

Wierd smattering of topics this week:

  • Founders Only Meetup in Bali (Poll)

  • Habits: Small changes that have a massive effect over time

  • Help me test something? (AI tool for job interview practice)

  • Startup Idea of the Week

🌏️ Founders Only Meetup in Bali?

The first week of June?

I’ve been asked a lot if I’m ever going to organize a Founders Only Meetup and my answer is always "No, that doesn’t sound like fun to plan”. I’m starting to warm up to the idea but only if it’s something crazy and fun like a trip to Bali.

What do you think? Would you like to get away to Bali where a week in an amazing villa is like $500 and a 60-minute massage is $20.

Would you attend a startup founders meetup in Bali?

Did you make New Year’s Resolutions? How are they going?

By mid-February 80% of people will have failed/given up on their New Year’s Resolutions.

I think the best take on getting this right was by James Clear in “Atomic Habits”. He talks about how success doesn’t result from major changes made all at once but from the cumulative effect of small decisions and actions over time.

Think about the 1% Rule:

Improving by just 1% every day can lead to significant progress over time. Small changes accumulate into remarkable results.

Think about how great it would be to grow your startup by 1% daily 🤯

I recommend making this rule a part of your company’s culture. Applying the 1% improvement rule encourages teams to seek continuous enhancements in their products, processes, and personal development.

Instead of aiming for monumental leaps, startups can focus on making their offerings or operations slightly better each day. This approach not only makes improvement more manageable but also helps in avoiding the overwhelm that comes with chasing big, audacious goals.

If you haven’t read Atomic Habits, I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s one of the best-selling books of the last decade for a reason.

💻️ Help me test something?

I’m working on a hobby project that I hope will help people better prepare for job interviews. The market is flooded with practice problems for developer interviews so I figured I would make a tool that helps non-devs practice answering questions they are likely to be asked in an interview.

It’s called PracticeInterview.ai and it’s a free tool that lets you paste in a job description (or use a sample) then GPT will create some highly relevant job interview questions based on that JD.

You speak your answers aloud (like in a real interview) and the AI will then grade your response and give you feedback on how to improve it (Even giving you a full sample of an “Ideal” answer).

You can then choose to re-record your answer to get a better grade or move on to the next question.

My ask:

Would you mind trying it out for me? If you wouldn’t mind taking 60 seconds to pretend you have a job interview coming up that you want to prepare for and giving it a try, I’d be SO grateful for any feedback at all!

Also, if you know anyone interviewing around, I’d love them to try it and give me any feedback that occurs to them! Thank you 🙏

💡 Startup (small business) Idea of the Week:

Un-GPT the GPTs

Us founders use ChatGPT for stuff. Many of us use the GPT API for things. What we mostly tend to forget is that “Normies” like your neighbors, and other people at the pickleball court DON’T use ChatGPT.

This means they won’t be taking advantage of the many GPTs that exist today. You have to have a GPT Plus account and most people will never do that. This is a juicy opportunity.

Why not scan the GPT Store for the most popular tools that are relevant to communities you’re a part of and build simple web apps that solve these problems for people in your community?

Will you create a “Venture Scale” business doing this? NO! But can you help a bunch of people and make like $5k - $10k a month passively (Per app) like Pieter Levels? Yeah, you really can.

Feel free to hit me up for ideas. I have too many of them.

THE END

Thank you as always for reading this. I don’t have any sponsors or directives or agenda so you’re always going to get whatever topics inspired me that week. This one was fun!

I love you all.

Sincerely,

John Hancock
